Although I was originally scheduled to return to work on 31 December, Brandon and I decided to take advantage of an opportunity to go out with our friends to celebrate the New Year. Robin's parents, who were in town for Christmas, graciously volunteered to watch everyone's kids so we could go downtown. Because we'd be leaving Kate with them for several hours in the evening, I decided I didn't want to drop her off at daycare that day. So I took one more day off and we spent December 31 together, enjoying my last official day of maternity leave. We also got a call from the CDC, letting us know that they had a slot for Kate starting the following week. While this was a bit of a relief for us, it was also sort of a wake-up call--I really was going to have to go back to work, and Kate really was going to have to go to daycare. We crammed our day full of all of the activities I knew I wouldn't be able to do with Kate during the day once I started work again (like snuggling!). Brandon got out of work a bit early and we got to spend a little family time together before we had to leave. Getting out of the house was a bit hectic and nerve-wracking (Kate decided to cry and cry) and by the time we got to the Hayes' I think both of us were second guessing our decision to go out. Thankfully, we got some delicious food in our bellies, Kate calmed down and our friends ushered us out the door.
We headed downtown with the Hayes, the Eastmans, and the Steiners, to the Malthouse Cellar, where there was a live band, a DJ, pool tables/darts and lots of open bars. Sadly, the ladies of our group didn't really get to take advantage of the unlimited alcohol--of the four of us only one wasn't pregnant or nursing. We found a good little place to hang out on the floor with the DJ, and settled in for some drinks, dancing, and LOTS of people watching. I had to take a timeout at about 10:30 to go and pump, but thankfully the staff opened up an office for me to use so I didn't have to compete with lots of drunken hoochies for stall space in the bathroom :-)
I'm happy to say that both Brandon and I were awake when the clock struck midnight! 2012 was a great year for us, and we were thankful to say goodbye to it, and hello to 2013, in the company of good friends. We are so grateful for all that we have and are excited to see what 2013 has in store for us.
When returned to Scotty and Robins and picked up our little bean, who had peacefully slept the evening away. She didn't make a peep on the way home and we quickly got her tucked into bed...then we followed as fast as we could. It was the first time in a long time that we've seen 2:30 am with no crying baby!
